At Rehab Medical, we are committed to not only improving the lives of the patients we serve but also advancing the careers of professionals dedicated to complex rehab technology (CRT).
Because CRT is known for being a highly complex and uniquely configured piece of mobility equipment, those who require CRT must go through an in-depth evaluation process led by a specialized seating and mobility professional.
This specialty seating and mobility professional, often referred to as an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), is highly trained in understanding the inner workings of CRT to recommend the best mobility solution for the individual’s unique needs.
ATPs are highly regarded in the mobility industry because of their advanced knowledge of complex mobility needs; however, not enough individuals are pursuing this rewarding career due to its challenging start up process. With the rise of mobility users having complex needs, more ATPs are needed to achieve improved mobility for users.
Recognizing this need, Rehab Medical has committed to cultivating high quality ATPs through its ATP Development Program, a comprehensive training pathway designed to prepare employees for the highly regarded ATP career path.

The ATP Development Program is a specialized training curriculum created to meet the unique needs of Rehab Medical’s team members. Developed in partnership with industry expert, certified occupational therapist, and tenured employee Rusty Mattingly, the program helps employees interested in pursuing an ATP career build the clinical knowledge needed to successfully pass the RESNA ATP certification exam. Additionally, the program helps ATPs refine their skills so they can excel in delivering customized mobility solutions.

“When I earned my ATP certification, I found that I learned more about what it meant to be an ATP from those who took on the role of mentoring me than I ever did studying for and taking the certification exam,” said Mattingly. “Taking inspiration from how my mentors helped shape my knowledge and skillsets as well as others in the company, we realized producing the industry’s best ATPs would be dependent upon how well they were mentored before and after taking the certification exam.”
“That’s why we decided to create the ATP Development Program to give aspiring ATPs and even existing ATPs looking to refine their skillsets, a platform to learn from each other, provide guidance and assistance in real world scenarios, and to serve as a strong support system for an industry that’s ever evolving,” concluded Mattingly.
The program is divided into three steps:

ATP Certification Prep
This is a structured, four-month training course to help aspiring ATPs build a solid understanding of complex rehab technology. The course consists of interactive learning and direct mentorship opportunities, expert-led virtual and hands-on training, and personalized support. Additionally, employees will have the opportunity to complete a practice exam and engage in open forum discussions.

RESNA Certification Exam
After the successful completion of the ATP Certification Prep course, employees will need to apply on the RESNA website to become eligible for the certification exam. Learn more about how to apply for the exam and its eligibility requirements prior to taking the exam.

Career Advancement Program
This post certification program was created for one simple reason: to turn certified ATPs into impactful certified ATPs. The ATP Career Advancement Program provides a structured path for new ATPs to advance their careers, gain hands-on experience in assessing, fitting, and delivering complex equipment, while still receiving the guidance and support of mentorship from seasoned ATPs. They will also undergo an ATP Competency test that includes shadowing seasoned ATPs, working with mentoring ATPs, and completing complex evaluations with sharpened skillsets and refined confidence.

“What's awesome about this program is that it gives you the tools and time to transition into a successful ATP position,” said Rehab Medical Vice President of Operations and Certified ATP Jarrad Rankin. “Some may think that getting certified is all there is, but that’s just the beginning. You don't become proficient until you get some experience. The ATP Development Program not only supports you in obtaining certification, but also helps you gain valuable hands-on experience. Additionally, getting a bonus for getting certified is a great incentive, but the rest is truly up to the individual to make the most out of the opportunities provided.”

Launched nearly two years ago under the RISE (Rehab Industries Supports Employees) initiative—a dedication to empowering employees with the tools to achieve their personal wellness and professional development goals while fostering strong workplace connections—the ATP Development Program has produced more than 20 high-achieving ATPs.
Our two most recent graduates shared insights on how the program helped them advance their skillsets and propel their careers.

“The ATP Development Program is hands down the best resource this company has to prepare employees for taking and passing the ATP certification exam,” said Rehab Medical Sales Manager and Certified ATP Graham Broome. “The program is a great way to refine your knowledge of what it means to be an ATP because it references material from the textbook, practice exam, RESNA position papers, and applies it throughout the course. The instructor knows how to challenge and coach participants in a way that gives them the ability to pass the exam on the first try,” concluded Broome.

“Rehab Medical’s ATP Development Program not only changed my job title from delivery technician to assistive technology professional, but it changed the way I view things in my personal life,” said Rehab Medical Delivery Technician and Certified ATP LaDarius Smith. “I went from asking repetitive questions expecting different results to actively listening and understanding the ‘why’ behind everything. Now that I’m certified, I appreciate all the teaching and disciplinary training the ATP Development Program instilled in me to get to where I am today,” concluded Smith.
